Biohazard & Trauma Cleanup
After an unattended death, a crime, a hoarding situation or a sewage spill, the cleanup needs care, discretion and the right protective equipment. DKI Central Alberta cleans and disinfects affected homes and businesses across Red Deer and Central Alberta.
Biohazard cleanup in Red Deer and Central Alberta
Blood, body fluids, sewage and animal waste can carry bacteria and viruses, and they soak into porous materials like carpet, drywall and furniture. Alberta Health Services guidance says all body fluids, including blood, must be treated as infectious, and that only knowledgeable people should do the cleanup.
These situations are often painful for families, landlords and business owners. We work with discretion and respect, explain what needs to happen, and take care of the cleanup so you don’t have to.
We clean up after:
Unattended deaths
Crime and trauma scenes
Hoarding situations
Sewage backups
Animal waste and rodent contamination
How biohazard cleanup works
This work is guided by the industry standard for it, ANSI/IICRC S540 Standard for Trauma and Crime Scene Cleanup, which sets out the procedures and precautions for trauma and crime scene cleanup on any surface or item.
We restrict access to the area, wear protective equipment, remove contaminated materials that can’t be decontaminated, then clean and disinfect what remains. Lingering smells are handled by our odour removal team, and sewage jobs follow our sewer backup cleanup process.
What to expect:
A respectful, private assessment
Containment and protective equipment
Removal of contaminated materials
Cleaning and disinfection
Odour removal
Proper disposal of biohazardous waste
Hoarding cleanup with care
MyHealth Alberta describes hoarding disorder as a mental health condition that makes it very hard for a person to get rid of things they own. Cleanups go best when they’re planned with the person and, where possible, their family or support workers.
We clear contaminated materials, clean and disinfect, and deal with any water damage, mould or pest contamination we find, working at a pace that respects the person living there. In Alberta, the Hoarding Disorder Foundation of Alberta offers support groups and supported cleanups for people who struggle with hoarding and their loved ones.
Hoarding cleanups can include:
Planning with the person and their supports
Sorting and removal of waste and contaminated items
Cleaning and disinfection
Mould, water and pest damage cleanup
Odour removal
Biohazard cleanup questions
Who is responsible for cleanup after a death or crime at home?
According to the RCMP, responsibility for cleaning the scene, including costs, may lie with the family or the property owner. Victim Services may be able to point you to resources, and home or business insurance may cover some or all of the cost.
Does insurance cover biohazard cleanup?
Sometimes. The RCMP notes that home or business insurance may cover some or all of the cost of cleaning a scene. Coverage depends on your policy, so call your insurer or broker. We document the work for your claim.
Is it safe to clean up blood myself?
Alberta Health Services guidance says all body fluids must be treated as infectious and that only knowledgeable people should do the cleanup. For anything beyond a very small spill, a professional is the safer choice.
What should I do if I find a needle?
MyHealth Alberta advises wearing gloves, picking the needle up by the plastic end with tongs or pliers, and putting it tip-down in a sharps container or a sealed, labelled hard container, then taking it to a needle drop-off location. Don’t recap or snap it, and don’t put loose needles in the garbage.
Can you remove the smell after a death or hoarding situation?
Yes. Once contaminated materials are removed and surfaces are cleaned and disinfected, our odour removal team treats what’s left so the smell doesn’t return.
