Asbestos Removal & Abatement
Renovating an older home, or found suspect insulation after a fire or flood? DKI Central Alberta tests for asbestos and removes it safely in Red Deer and across Central Alberta, with containment, certified workers and air clearance testing before you move back in.
Asbestos abatement in Red Deer and Central Alberta
Asbestos was used in Canadian building materials for decades because it resists heat and dampens sound. Left intact and sealed, it poses no significant health risk, according to Health Canada. The danger starts when it’s disturbed: sanding, cutting, demolition, or fire and water damage can release fibres that cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis years later.
That matters in Central Alberta. About 48% of homes in Red Deer were built in 1990 or earlier (2021 Census), when asbestos-containing drywall mud, flooring, textured ceilings and vermiculite insulation were common. If your home is that age, test before you renovate, and call us before anyone opens a wall after a fire or flood.
Our asbestos services include:
Asbestos inspections and sampling
Lab testing of suspect materials
Containment and negative air pressure
Asbestos removal and abatement
Post-abatement air clearance testing
Sealed, labelled disposal
Where asbestos hides in older Alberta homes
You can’t identify asbestos by looking at it; a sample has to be analyzed in a lab. Alberta’s occupational health and safety guidance flags these common household materials in buildings constructed before 1990.
Vermiculite needs special care. Health Canada advises assuming any vermiculite insulation installed before 1990 may contain asbestos: don’t store things in the attic, keep children out of it, seal gaps around the attic hatch, light fixtures and outlets, and don’t try to remove it yourself.
Common asbestos-containing materials:
Vermiculite attic insulation (often sold as Zonolite)
Drywall joint compound and plaster
Popcorn and stippled ceiling textures
Vinyl floor tiles, sheet flooring and mastic
Pipe, duct and boiler insulation
Stucco, cement parging and asbestos-cement siding
How asbestos removal works
Every abatement job is planned around the four principles in the Alberta Asbestos Abatement Manual: isolate the work area, protect the workers, keep fibre release to a minimum, and clean up and decontaminate properly.
Alberta also requires every worker who enters an asbestos work area to hold a valid asbestos worker certificate, and requires the contractor to notify Alberta OHS before abatement begins. Ask any company you’re considering to confirm both. For costs and more detail, read our guide to asbestos removal in Alberta.
What to expect:
Site visit and sampling of suspect materials
Lab results, usually within 3 to 5 business days
Notice to Alberta OHS at least 72 hours before work starts
Containment, negative air and certified asbestos workers
Removal, HEPA cleaning and air clearance testing
Disposal at an approved landfill, with paperwork for your records
Asbestos questions from Central Alberta homeowners
How do I know if my house has asbestos?
You can’t tell by looking. A trained technician takes small samples of suspect materials and a lab analyzes them, usually by polarized light microscopy. Homes built before 1990 carry the highest risk, but asbestos has turned up in buildings finished in the early 1990s too.
Can I remove asbestos myself in Alberta?
Alberta’s OHS asbestos rules are written for employers and contractors, so a homeowner working on the house they live in is generally outside them. Health Canada and Alberta Health Services still strongly advise against disturbing suspected asbestos yourself, because fibres spread easily and the health effects appear years later. Any contractor you hire has to follow the rules in full.
How much does asbestos testing and removal cost?
It depends on the material, the amount and how hard it is to reach. Testing a single area usually costs a few hundred dollars, and removing vermiculite from an attic often runs roughly $4,000–$12,000. We quote every job after a site assessment. Our asbestos cost guide breaks down typical prices.
Do I need an asbestos report to demolish a building in Red Deer?
Yes. The City of Red Deer’s demolition permit application asks for an Asbestos Assessment Report, and if asbestos is found, an Asbestos Abatement Report must be submitted before the permit is approved. Other municipalities set their own requirements, so check with yours.
What happens to asbestos after a fire or flood?
Fire, water and the tear-out that follows can disturb asbestos-containing drywall, flooring and insulation. In homes built before 1990 we sample suspect materials before demolition starts, so the fire or water damage cleanup doesn’t spread fibres through the house.
Is vermiculite insulation dangerous?
Only if it’s disturbed. Health Canada advises assuming vermiculite installed before 1990 may contain asbestos. Keep out of the attic, seal gaps around the hatch, light fixtures and outlets, and have it professionally removed before any renovation that would disturb it.
