When it’s safe to travel, our teams will be onsite to determine the severity of the damage and provide emergency board-up services until full restoration can begin. We will also work with you to determine whether it is safe to stay on the property, or whether structural damage poses too big of risk for you to stay.

Storm and impact damage can be incredibly serious, causing damage you may not see to the structure of your property. Assessing how bad the damage is and what to do next is a job best left to the professionals at DKI Central Alberta.

Hail and storm damage in Central Alberta

Central Alberta sits in Hailstorm Alley, the band from High River through Calgary and Red Deer to Lacombe and west to Rocky Mountain House, and The Weather Network describes the stretch between Calgary and Red Deer as Canada’s greatest concentration of hailstorms. Canada’s record hailstone, 123 mm across, fell near Markerville, about 35 km southwest of Red Deer, on August 1, 2022.

The losses add up. The Insurance Bureau of Canada recorded $546.5 million in insured losses from a Central Alberta hail, wind and water storm on August 7, 2014, more than $30 million from the June 20, 2017 storm that hit Red Deer, Innisfail and Pine Lake, and nearly $40 million from the August 23, 2026 hail that hit Springbrook in Red Deer County, just south of the city. In July 2026, two EF2 tornadoes touched down near Rocky Mountain House and Leslieville.

After a storm, we handle:

N

Emergency tarping of damaged roofs

N

Board-up of broken windows and doors

N

Water extraction and drying after roof leaks

N

Cleanup of debris and fallen trees on structures

N

Documentation for hail and wind insurance claims

Storm and hail damage questions

What should I do right after hail or wind damages my home?

Stay safe and away from downed power lines and damaged structures. Photograph the damage, cover broken windows and roof openings if it’s safe, move belongings away from leaks and call your insurer. We can tarp, board up and start drying the same day.

Does home insurance cover hail and wind damage?

Hail and wind are normally covered perils on Canadian home policies, though deductibles and roof coverage vary. Report damage promptly, because a slow roof leak left unrepaired can lead to claims for water and mould damage being questioned. Our insurance claims guide explains what to document.

How do I know if hail damaged my roof?

Look for dented vents and flashing, granules collected at the downspouts, cracked or missing shingles, and new stains on ceilings or in the attic after rain. Don’t climb onto a damaged roof yourself; we can assess it safely.

Can storm damage lead to water damage inside?

Yes. Hail and wind open roofs, siding and windows, and the next rain gets in. Our guide to hail-driven water damage explains how roof damage turns into interior flooding.

How fast can you tarp a roof?

We’re on call 24/7 for emergency tarping and board-up across Red Deer and Central Alberta. Covering openings quickly limits interior water damage and is something insurers expect you to do.
