Mould (Mold) Remediation
Musty smell, black spots on drywall, or mould coming back after a leak? DKI Central Alberta removes mould (mold) safely in Red Deer and across Central Alberta and tracks down the moisture problem behind it, so it doesn’t come back.
Mould removal in Red Deer and Central Alberta
Mould (or mold, as it’s often spelled) grows wherever moisture lingers. In Central Alberta homes that usually means a basement after spring runoff or a sewer backup, the back of drywall after a slow plumbing leak, an attic where warm, moist air condenses during a cold snap, or a ceiling under a hail-damaged roof. Health Canada notes that mould can begin to grow within 48 hours in an area with excess moisture.
Mould is more than a stain. It breaks down drywall, wood and insulation, and exposure can irritate the eyes, nose and throat and worsen asthma and allergy symptoms. That’s why we remove mould-damaged materials and deal with the moisture source instead of painting over it or masking it with chemicals.
When the job is done, we’ll show you where the moisture came from and what needs fixing so the mould stays gone.
Our mould (mold) remediation services include:
Mould inspection and moisture mapping
Containment and HEPA air filtration
Removal of mould-damaged drywall, insulation and flooring
HEPA vacuuming and cleaning of surfaces
Drying, and finding the moisture source
Cleaning of contents
Deodorization
How mould remediation works
We follow the industry standard for professional mould remediation (IICRC S520), which makes physically removing mould the primary method; chemicals and ozone play a supporting role at most. Every job is sized to how much mould there is and how far it has spread, and the work area is sealed off so spores don’t travel through the rest of the house.
In homes built before 1990, drywall compound, flooring and insulation can contain asbestos, so we test suspect materials before tearing anything out. Learn more about our asbestos removal service.
What to expect:
Inspection to find the mould and the moisture behind it
Containment with plastic sheeting and negative air
Removal of mould-damaged materials, bagged on site
HEPA vacuuming and cleaning of remaining surfaces
Drying to confirmed moisture readings

Mould questions from Central Alberta homeowners
Is it mould or mold?
Both. “Mould” is the Canadian spelling used by Health Canada and CMHC, and “mold” is the American spelling. They mean the same thing, and we remove both.
When can I clean mould myself?
Health Canada says a small area, three or fewer patches with a total area under one square metre, can usually be cleaned by a homeowner using an unscented soap solution, gloves, safety glasses and an N95 mask. Call a professional for a single patch larger than three square metres, mould that comes back after cleaning, mould after a sewer backup or flood, or mould you suspect is inside walls or ceilings.
Should I use bleach on mould?
No. Health Canada advises against using bleach to clean up mould. Scrub washable surfaces with an unscented soap solution and dry them quickly. If mould has grown into drywall, the drywall usually has to be cut out and replaced; painting over it doesn’t stop it growing.
How fast does mould grow after water damage?
Health Canada says mould will begin to grow within 48 hours in an area with excess moisture, which is why we start drying as soon as possible after a leak or flood. Our guide on how fast mould grows after water damage has a day-by-day timeline.
Does home insurance cover mould removal?
Usually only when the mould comes from a sudden, insured event such as a burst pipe that you reported promptly. Mould from slow leaks, condensation or long-term humidity is generally excluded; as the Insurance Bureau of Canada puts it, a home insurance policy is not a maintenance contract. Check your policy, ask your adjuster, or read our insurance claims guide.
How much does mould remediation cost?
It depends on how much mould there is, where it is and what has to be removed. Our mould remediation cost guide for Central Alberta breaks down typical 2026 prices by job size.
Do I need an air test for mould?
Usually not. Health Canada does not recommend testing the air for mould, because the results don’t predict health effects and rarely show where the problem is. A visual inspection and moisture readings tell us far more.
Can mould grow on concrete?
Yes. Concrete itself doesn’t feed mould, but the dust, dirt and moisture on basement walls and floors do. Our guide on mould on concrete explains how to clean it and keep it from coming back.
