Emergency Board-Up & Tarping
A broken window, a fire-damaged doorway or a hole in the roof leaves your home or business open to rain, snow and intruders. DKI Central Alberta boards up and tarps damaged properties 24/7 across Red Deer and Central Alberta, so the damage stops where it is.
Emergency board-up in Red Deer and Central Alberta
After a fire, a storm or a break-in, an open window or roof lets in rain and snow, and an unsecured doorway invites theft and vandalism. Securing the property quickly protects what’s left.
It’s also part of your insurance obligations. Alberta’s Insurance Act requires policyholders to take all reasonable steps to prevent further loss or damage to insured property, and insurers must contribute on a prorated basis toward reasonable and proper expenses for doing so. The Insurance Bureau of Canada gives boarding up windows and tarping damaged roofs as examples, and suggests hiring a qualified professional when it isn’t safe to do yourself.
We secure:
Broken windows and patio doors
Fire-damaged doors and walls
Hail- and wind-damaged roofs
Openings left by a vehicle impact
Commercial storefronts and entrances
Vacant or fire-damaged buildings
How emergency tarping works
On a damaged roof, a properly secured tarp keeps rain and melting snow out until permanent repairs can be made. We cover the damaged area, fasten the tarp so wind can’t lift it, and check the attic and ceilings below for water that has already come in.
Central Alberta’s storms make this a regular call. The August 23, 2026 hailstorm shattered windows and shredded siding in Springbrook, and two EF2 tornadoes near Rocky Mountain House in July 2026 left homes with roofs stripped. If water is already inside, we start water damage restoration the same day. See our storm, hail and wind damage service for more.
What to expect:
A 24/7 call answered by our team
A safety check of the damaged area
Board-up of openings or tarping of the roof
Photos and notes for your insurance claim
Water extraction and drying if needed
Board-up after a fire
After a fire, doors and windows are often broken or left open. Once the fire department releases the property, we board it up and secure the site against weather and theft, then help you plan the cleanup.
From there, our fire and smoke damage crews can start soot cleanup and odour control, and our contents restoration team can pack out and inventory your belongings.
After a fire we can:
Board up doors and windows
Install temporary fencing
Secure the site against weather and theft
Start soot cleanup and odour control
Pack out and inventory belongings
Board-up and tarping questions
Will my insurance pay for emergency board-up?
Usually, when the damage comes from an insured event such as a fire, storm or break-in. Alberta’s Insurance Act requires you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, and insurers must contribute toward reasonable and proper expenses for doing so. Keep receipts and photos.
How fast can you board up or tarp my property?
We’re on call 24/7. Call (403) 224-0350 and we’ll tell you when a crew can be there.
Can I tarp the roof myself?
Only if you can do it safely. Don’t climb onto a wet, icy or damaged roof. The Insurance Bureau of Canada suggests hiring a qualified professional if temporary repairs aren’t safe to do yourself, and a loose tarp can blow off and cause more damage.
Do I have to wait for the adjuster before boarding up?
No. Securing the property is part of your obligation to prevent further damage, and Alberta’s statutory conditions give the insurer a further right of access after you’ve secured it. Take photos before and after so the adjuster can see the original damage.
Do you board up commercial properties?
Yes. We secure storefronts, offices and other commercial buildings after break-ins, vehicle impacts, fires and storms. See our commercial restoration service.
