Odour Removal & Deodorization

Smoke, sewage, pets or must: DKI Central Alberta finds the source of lingering odours in Red Deer and Central Alberta homes and businesses and removes it, instead of covering it up.

Odour removal in Red Deer and Central Alberta

Bad smells after a fire, flood or sewer backup come from residue you often can’t see: soot in wall cavities and ducts, contaminated water in carpet pad and drywall, or mould behind finishes. Air fresheners and household sprays only mask it, and the smell returns.

Our deodorization work follows the same rule as the rest of our restoration services: find the source, remove or clean it, then treat what’s left. It’s often part of a fire, water or mould job, but we also handle odour problems on their own, like a home that was smoked in or a rental after tenants with pets. For decomposition and other biohazard situations, see our biohazard cleanup service.

How we remove odours

Every odour job starts with an inspection to find where the smell is coming from and what it has soaked into. Depending on what we find, treatment can include the steps on the right.

Safety comes first. When we use ozone, the space has to be empty of people, pets and plants, and we ventilate it before you return. Health Canada advises against running ozone generators in occupied homes, so don’t use consumer ozone machines yourself.

Odour treatment can include:

N

Removing or cleaning the source material

N

HEPA vacuuming and air scrubbing

N

Cleaning HVAC components and ducts

N

Thermal fogging in unoccupied rooms

N

Ozone treatment in empty, sealed spaces only

N

Sealing surfaces with odour-blocking primer

N

Cleaning and deodorizing contents

Wildfire smoke odours in Central Alberta

Wildfire smoke has become a regular summer problem around Red Deer. Alberta Wildfire recorded 2,211,900 hectares burned in 2023, and Red Deer’s Air Quality Health Index reached the top of the scale (10+) on May 20, 2023 and May 11, 2024, and hit 10 again on July 24, 2026.

Smoke from distant fires settles into fabrics, carpets and attic insulation and gets pulled through the furnace. Alberta Health Services advises washing interior surfaces, using only HEPA vacuums, replacing furnace filters and having a professional clean the HVAC system if smoke got inside. If the smell lingers after that, we can help. Read more about hidden wildfire smoke damage.

Signs smoke got inside your home:

N

A smoky smell when the furnace starts

N

Grey film on window sills and light fixtures

N

A darkened furnace filter

N

Odour in closets, bedding and upholstery

N

A smell that returns after cleaning

Odour removal questions

Why does the smell keep coming back after cleaning?

Because the source is still there. Smoke residue, contaminated water or mould inside walls, ducts, insulation or carpet pad keeps releasing odour until it’s removed or sealed. Sprays and air fresheners only cover it up for a while.

Is ozone treatment safe?

Only in an empty space. Health Canada advises against using ozone generators in homes because ozone can harm your health. When we use ozone, no people, pets or plants stay inside, and we ventilate before anyone returns.

Can I stay home during odour removal?

Often, yes, while we clean, run HEPA air scrubbers and seal surfaces. For thermal fogging or ozone, the treated area has to be empty for several hours. Before we start, we’ll tell you which rooms to avoid and for how long.

Does insurance cover odour removal?

When the odour comes from an insured event such as a fire or a burst pipe, deodorization is usually part of the restoration claim. Odours from long-term causes like smoking, pets or slow leaks generally aren’t covered. Check your policy, ask your adjuster, or read our insurance claims guide.

How long does it take to get rid of a smoke smell?

A single room with light smoke residue can take a day or two. Heavy smoke through a whole house, especially in ducts and the attic, takes longer because every affected surface has to be cleaned first. We’ll give you a timeline after the inspection.

Can you remove smoke smell from clothes and furniture?

Yes. Our contents restoration team cleans and deodorizes clothing, bedding, upholstery and other belongings.
